Today we're taking a look at the Animals, Plants & Nature (APN) photography categories and what goes in there. It won't be as detailed as I've done some years ago. You can see the recap here. We'll look at the gallery descriptions today and some features!

The next categories are available when you submit to Photography > Animals, Plants & Nature;

  • Aquatic Life
  • Photographs of plants and animals living underwater.

  • Birds
  • Photographs where birds are the primary subject.

  • Domesticated Animals
  • Photographs of animals that have been domesticated (tamed to live with humans), as either pets or livestock, and which depend on humans for survival.

  • Flowers, Trees & Plants
  • Photographs of plant life, such as trees, flowers, shrubs and herbs.

  • Fungi
  • Photographs of fungi, such as yeast, molds, lichens, mushrooms and toadstools.

  • Geology
  • Photographs of geological features, such as rocks and natural geological formations.

  • Invertebrates
  • Photographs of invertebrates, such as insects, snails, arachnids and starfish.

  • Landscapes
  • Photographs of natural scenes that have land as their main focus, and which is usually free of man-made obstructions and human activity.

  • Other
  • Photographs of animals, plants, and nature that do not fit into any of the other categories.

  • Reptiles & Amphibians
  • Photographs of reptiles and amphibians, such as lizards, snakes, turtles, frogs and salamanders.

  • Waterscapes
  • Photographs of natural scenery that contains water as the main subject, including oceans, rivers, waterfalls, and lakes.

  • Weather and Sky
  • Photographs of nature involving the sky or weather features as the most significant element.

  • Wild Animals
  • Photographs of animals that do not typically live with people including captive wild animals.

They all pretty much speak for themselves, but sometimes there is confusion about some categories. For example about something Flowers, Trees & Plants or Still Life > Cut Flower & Plant Arrangement, but the description should clarify this:

  • Cut Flower & Plant Arrangement
  • Photographs of cut flowers & plants individually or as part of arrangements, which are not to be confused with live plants.

Jules1983 has written an article years ago about this subject and I still think this explains it very well. You can find the article here: Flowers & Plants: Still Life vs. APN

The same confusion sometimes appears about trees. Trees can be submitted to multiple categories, for example in Flowers, Trees & Plants, but also in Landscapes or Gardens, Parks & Cemeteries. There is no definite write or wrong. Just as your photographs of insects can go in Invertebrates, but sometimes in Macro as well, as long as it's taken on a macro level. It's your choice! =)
