APN Daily Deviations - November 2011This is the eighteenth, and for now my last, edition of a monthly news article to show the Daily Deviations from Photography > Animals, Plants & Nature (APN) of the previous month that I gave a DD, in case you missed some, or just want to see them again!

My term as the Animals, Plants & Nature Photography Community Volunteers has almost ended, so this will - for now - be my last edition of the monthly DD summary. You've been introduced to your new APN CV a few weeks ago, so you should send all of your suggestions to `trevg from now on. I won't be able to feature any more DD's.
You've been awesome, I've received so many wonderful suggestions and I really couldn't have done all these magnificent features without the help of you awesome deviants!

Recently, I announced changes to Daily Deviations in this journal and I'm happy to say that the response has been favorable. To review, we have made the following changes:
a> The "3-month rule" is now the "6-month rule" meaning an artist cannot receive another DD if they have had one in the last 6 months.
b> Daily Deviation selectors are limited to a maximum of one selection per day. This has been put in place to focus on quality vs quantity.
The hard-coding of these new guidelines is now in place (special thanks to $ZombieCoder for that

Daily Deviation Roundup - October 2011 Surreal Photography
Surrealism is about pushing the boundaries and stepping outside of your comfort zone. It ties in loosely with Abstract and more strongly with Conceptual Photography but there are definite divisions between them. Surreal photography would be more about creating a world or image which goes beyond the physical world as we know it. It usually shows something which would be impossible in real life or tampers with the line defining what is real and what is imaginary. Surreal = beyond the real.

Blind Winter Contest Results!This winter, we challenged you to close your eyes and tell us about winter without your sight, and we're happy to report back that several people took the challenge and turned it on its head! With a good amount of entries to work with, it was difficult to narrow it down to just three, so difficult in fact that even after consulting `Halatia for help we couldn't do it! As such, we chose two honorable mentions to go along with the winners, because we felt these two also merited recognition.

Manga/Anime Spotlight is a weekly feature that highlights the different artists across the deviantART's Manga/Anime community, and is a portal to get to know a bit more about them and their works.
This week's feature is *SleepyKiks

1.) To start off, what is your favorite medium and tools to use?
I am Primarily a digital art. I mostly use Flash CS3 but, I am also a fan of Fireworks CS4. I am about 50/50 between using a mouse and using a tablet. In the last few years I got a wacom cintiq which was a very nice upgrad from my old and well worn graphire. For traditional medium I have been learning to use markers for finished work instead of just comps and rough design.

2.) When you draw, do you plan everything out first, or do you just see where the drawing takes you?
If I am working on a comic or commission I usually start out by doing a few thumbnails or storyboards to g

January 2012 Vector DDs!What is Vector Art?
In digital art there are two layer formats: raster and vector. Raster formats are based in pixels and vector is based in paths and points.
When you resize a raster image, you are expanding the pixels. Your program has to try to estimate what the colours would be for the additional pixels created. Due to this, the image loses it's clarity and creates a pixel effect.
When you resize a vector image, you are increasing the distance between the points. Due to this, the image doesn't lose it's clarity and doesn't pixellate.
The key element of vector is that it's infinitely scalable without any quality loss and it's why we love it!

How do you know if your deviation has been accepted as a DD? Do you get a message or do you just have to look for it each day?

The deviation or the suggestion? I'm sure you'll notice when you get a DD, and if you mean the suggestion; that depends on the Community Volunteer. I send the suggester(s) a note saying I've set it up to be a DD and the date, but I know not all the CV's do this. Then you have to check it every day yes
